Layers of Literacy Instruction: Teaching Guided Reading to Primary Grade Students at Rosemont Elementary and Westcliff Elementary With Literacy Coaching

Description of Project:
Each spring, Fort Worth ISD Kindergarten and First Grade teachers partner with  50-60 EC-6 Junior II students enrolled in EDEC 30223: Education in Elementary Curriculum: Reading.   Each TCU student is assigned 3-4 primary grade students to teach each week for four weeks. TCU students administer informal literacy assessments, analyze those assessments to determine strengths and needs of each kindergartener or first grader, plan, and teach individualized guided reading, writing, and phonics lessons each week.

Adding an additional layer of literacy learning, 12 Language and Literacy Accelerated Master's students who are enrolled in EDUC 60513: Practicum in Education: Literacy Coaching coach the undergraduate students.  Providing real-world opportunities for stepping into the role of literacy coach and leader allowed the graduate students to try on role they may one day pursue.
Promoting Literacy Engagement with 8th Graders

Description of Project:

Each fall, a Fort Worth ISD middle school requests support for 8th grade students who are receiving reading intervention.  The Language and Literacy Accelerated Master's students enrolled in Advanced Study of Literacy Instruction (EDUC 60053) tutor the 8th graders for 15 sessions.  In order to overcome the potential hurdle of resistance to reading, we utilize low level/high interest books. These engaging books, along with carefully planned lessons, allowed the  students opportunities to develop successful and productive reading strategies to take into future reading experiences.   This experience challenged our Accelerated Masters students to put theory into practice, and as a result, their knowledge of literacy instruction expanded.
